A Case Study... |
Custom Website
for Real Estate Magazines, LLPOfficeCommercial.com We created a database driven web presence that serves as an online magazine complete with articles and search capability as well as a point of contact for subscribers and advertisers. We designed and built an extensive company intranet for Office & Commercial Real Estate Magazines, LLP. The intranet serves as a place for company collaboration, document repository, broadcast e-mail newsletter feature, and is where the public web presence is maintained. This project combined a lot of great ideas into a functional web solution that adds value to this growing company. Programming languages/technologies used include ASP (vbscript), SQL Server 2000, stored procedures, JavaScript, HTML, and DHTML. The client wanted to archive all the magazine's articles online for public consumption. We created a content management system (CMS) enabling authorized users to upload and organize articles into issues and cities of publication. On the left is a screen shot of a magazine issue's article links as it appears on the public site. Readers just select the city and issue to find articles of interest. A simple to use search form enables readers to search for articles containing specific authors, titles, keywords, or phrases. The article CMS is accessed from the company intranet. The site includes rotating banner advertisements. The client also wanted the site to serve as a point of contact for advertisers and subscribers. We created subscribe forms for the magazine as well as the e-mail newsletter. The newsletter has over 20,000 subscribers. We also created forms for advertisers to request more information about advertising in the magazine and on the site. All forms are validated (checked for errors) before being submitted. All forms include error checking to ensure the submitted information is accurate and complete. ![]() The company intranet performs many business functions. It is a password protected area with role based rights/permissions. It is organized into logical sections similar to the departments of the company: Human Resources; Sales; Production; Accounting; Site Administration; and company communications. ![]() The Human Resources section has an employee directory, general HR forms, company holidays, request/approve/view time off feature, and benefits documentation. The Sales functions include advertising contract maintenance (add/view/edit/delete), general sales forms, access to sales leads from the public site, a no sales list for advertisers with past due accounts, and an e-mail newsletter creator. The e-mail newsletter creator enables non-technical users to create newsletter content using a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor from predefined templates, and technically experienced users to create newsletter content from scratch. Production section enables collaboration across the company with uploadable production schedules, uploadable market schedules, and downloadable general forms. The Accounting functions include reporting of weekly employee mileage requests and invoice credit request. Finally, administrative functions include reporting of public site traffic and intranet usage. |
